Shibuki Jun in Jazzmania
SUPER impromptu stream (forgive the terrible picture): I’ve had a tumultuous last couple weeks (lots of downs, and a big up), but things seem to be settling down now, and dammit, it’s Pride here in Brooklyn and I need something sparkly to celebrate.

SO! Come share an All-Revue Takarazuka stream with me tonight! If you don't know what Takarazuka is, it is an all-female musical theater company in Japan, and their revues are Vegas-style song and dance extravaganzas.

Jazzmania (Shibuki Jun lead version), and Revue ‘99 (Aika Mire in a Revue-themed revue) possibly with other surprises after. 8:30 pm EST at https://cytu.be/r/Flashback_Project , come join me!

Poster with Shibuki Jun dressed as a pirate

Great Pirates (2001) and Blue Moon Blue (2000) stream! Tonight, 2/25, 9 PM EST!

Great Pirates: Shibuki Jun turns pirate to get revenge on other pirates!  Pirate dances ensue, as do wigs of varying quality. Bonus Yamato Yuga!

Blue Moon Blue: A revue with Makoto Tsubasa as a reincarnated prince looking for love, plus Shibuki Jun as an overly forward snake god. Great music, sparkly costumes aaaaand random bunny girls.

ETA: It’s going to be https://cytu.be/r/Flashback_Project after all, but we may need to move after Great Pirates for Blue Moon Blue. I’ll keep you posted.

So I’ve made the offer to fellow Takarazuka fans that I will rip their VHS tapes to DVD and/or video file for preservation for free.

If you want me to do that for you, I promise, I will not stream those video files without your permission. I will not give those video files to anyone else, except:

A) Someone else who has the exact same VHS, because I’m too lazy efficient to rip the same tape twice.

B) An academic librarian, on some far off day, for the preservation of the art form, if you fall off a cliff and die.

C) You, or someone who you tell me to.

Drop by https://cytu.be/r/Flashback_Project starting at 10 pm EST tonight for an online New Years Eve party of ridiculous. Luna with Shibuki Jun and Makoto Tsubasa and wee!Yamato Yuuga will be playing (Rock Stars! Moon gods! Mad scientists!) as well as selections from Action!

I have a mission for you, though, dear readers: Bring me links of delicious crack! If you know a ridiculous vid or clip* currently on Youtube (or other similar platform) and you feel like sharing.... Share with the party! We'll watch it together!

(*Please no rape, gory murder or other massively triggering things. Those can definitely be the subject of cracky dark humor, see the Game of Thrones vid "Heads Will Roll", but maybe not the right thing for tonight)

Star Wars: The Jedi Fall @ Takarazuka (2704 words) by Grey_Bard
Chapters: 2/2
Fandom: Star Wars Prequel Trilogy
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Padmé Amidala/Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi & Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi/Satine Kryze
Characters: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Padmé Amidala
Additional Tags: Takarazuka Revue, References to Takarazuka Kagekidan, Imaginary Musicals, Humor, Yukigumi

Summary: The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, as adapted into musical theater by the Takarazuka Revue of Japan.

(Let's just imagine that licensing out the Disney songbook for an album was only the beginning of Disney's relationship with the all-female musical theater troupe, the Takarazuka Revue. Sparkles, discontinuity, casting and lightsaber interpretive dance ensue. )

A Detailed Summary of The Jedi Fall @ Takarazuka as written by an American fan

Act 1 - The Phantom Menace: As the curtains and the suns of Tatooine rise Shmi Skywalker, a slave, sings "As the Suns Rise, so Rises Hope" to her son Anakin. In it, she tells him that like the suns, hope always returns, including her hope for her child. The music is influenced by and includes parts of "Binary Sunset" from the original Star Wars score.  )

Or read it on AO3 here.

To people new to Takarazuka: I encourage you to read this short explanation of what the heck I'm talking about and check out tumblr.com/tagged/takarazuka for more of the delightful sparkly all-female musical crack that is this fandom.

Tomorrow, Sunday 10/23, 9:30 pm EST, I welcome you to the Takarazuka Flashback Project’s next stream of converted VHS vintage takarazuka, Tango Argentina (Hanagumi 2000) and the revue Prestige (Tsukigumi, 1996). I'll try to open the stream a half hour early with some music or clips from other revues.

Contrary to what I originally believed, it does not feature tango in Argentina. No, it features an Argentinian immigrant (I think) dancing tango in Paris. Because he’s an artist, and all artists must live in Paris, obviously! Also it features characters angstily dancing their feelings about World War I and a happy ending.

Prestige starts out as a dignified revue, and then degenerates into delicious crack. I heavily endorse it.

There will also be a morning stream on Monday 10/24 at 10:30 am EST.

Everyone welcome! (Even if you don't know me or anything about Takarazuka.)

You can find the stream here: https://cytu.be/r/Flashback_Project , and you can check what times these are in your timezone at the Takarazuka stream schedule here: https://trello.com/b/zPKbMvay/streaming-schedule

First ever Takarazuka Flashback Project video livestream!

The show from Action! (aka Action! Act 1) starring Saki Asaji plus the Jazzmania revue starring Makoto Tsubasa!

9 pm EST, Wednesday 9/28!

Action! is a sf/fantasy crack show set at Christmas including robots, drunken wannabe rockstars and body-swap as well as Saki Asaji’s sunny, goofy smile. Jazzmania is a jazz-themed revue great for Makoto Tsubasa’s voice and Old Hollywood savoir faire... with random added anachronistic machine guns and silver lamé.

You don’t need to know anything about Takarazuka (sparkly genderbending musicals) or speak any Japanese to enjoy this stream, I promise! New fan-friendly!

The link will be posted on this journal, closer to the time.

A close friend of mine has some Takarazuka rarities on VHS, and as you may know, a couple months ago, the last manufacturer of VHS players stopped making them. So for her personal use, archival purposes, and streaming possibilities, she’d like me to convert them to digital files or dvd, well, somehow.

The less said about my sad attempts with EasyCap, the better.

(Since VHS is now officially an obsolete format, and these items are not, and never have been, available on DVD, I really do feel we’ve done our ethical due diligence, although I understand if you disagree.)

A number of options and brands are discussed online, but I’d really love to hear from people who have done it themselves, what worked for them.

So I showed a bunch of Takarazuka (all-female Japanese musicals) @con-txt and I promised people I’d give them a rundown online so they can explore more. Here it is!

“Guys and Dolls” from the 2002 Moon Troupe aka Tsukigumi production starring Shibuki Jun
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vwqU4TARyPw

The TI Project sampler disk (http://ti-project.livejournal.com/19814.html) skipping Quiz Hexagon, The Flower Halftime Show, The Lovers’ Suicide, Tale of Two Cities and Phantom.
Cocktail (http://ti-project.livejournal.com/38752.html) skipping the Tequila basketball number.
This tango number to Libertango starring Yoka Wao and Hanafusa Mari https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euBei_vd5L8
Hikari to Kage from Legend of the Galactic Heroes, aka the “Let me dubcon you into accepting my fealty and also my glowing prosthetic eye” number. (No, seriously, it’s amazing, watch it.) http://amuseoffyre.tumblr.com/post/58527774294/yukinojou-drcalvin-hikari-to-kage-yuumi
Yami ga Hirogaru (the “Let me seduce you, young prince, I am male but Death and therefore this isn’t gay, but it totally is” number) from, I believe but am not sure, the 1996 Star Troupe aka Hoshigumi production of Elisabeth https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KcE8cN4OXbo
(Note: Sorry to everyone who made awesome suggestions that I didn’t use this time. I haven’t been able to find the clips you suggested, but I’ll keep looking!)

P.S. The Takarazuka Fan Podcast has just released an episode on how to get into Takarazuka, if that's relevant to your interests. http://caithion.net/takarazukapodcast/2016/08/03/episode-13-how-to-get-into-takarazuka/
